Stick Clip Like a Pro: DIY Safety for the Send
You spot a sweet-looking climb, but the first bolt is way up there, and the holds below it are questionable, tiny enough to make your palms sweat. No worries—you’ve got a stick clip! …Or at least, you would if it weren’t back at the car, were the gumbie guy left it. Don’t give up just yet. You can whip up a DIY, single-use, disposable, vegan, free-range stick clip right on the spot. Call it what you want—it might just save your ass. All you need is a stick, a rock, your luckiest quickdraw, and some good ol’ tape.
Step 1- Get your materials ready
You will need the longest stick you can find, your luckiest quickdraw, and some good ol' climbing tape, and a small rock/stick.
Step 2- Tape your quickdraw
All your going to do is tape the spine of your quickdraw to the end of the stick you found. If you want to get fancy you can angle the draw before you tape it to make it slightly easy to hook the hanger.
Step 3- Put you rock and rope in the draw
Take your small rock you found and place it in the draw so it makes the gate stay open. Then clip the rope to bottom carabiner making sure it won't be back clipped when you get the draw on the hanger.
Step 4- Clip it, and yank the stick out
Now just reach as high as you can and clip it. Once it is on the hanger just pull down, break the tape, and climb on!
BAM! Just like that you prevented a broken ankle and you didn't have to hike back to the car. This disposable stick-clip is a little janky and you might get a few weird looks but at the end of the day thats way better then getting injured. Just make sure to grab all the materals before going to the crag, next time your at your favorit gear store.
